PRECO Announces $104,000 in College Scholarships

Two dozen local students were awarded a total of $104,000 in scholarships by Operation Round Up, the charitable foundation of Wauchula-based Peace River Electric Cooperative. Since Operation Round Up’s formation in 2005, nearly 200 students have shared in more than $900,000 in college scholarships granted.

“This year, considering the financial impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on families, we are taking measures to increase the number of students receiving scholarships,” states Ellen Hamel, Operation Round Up chair. “By granting more two-year scholarships than ever before, we are increasing the number of recipients to an all-time high of 24 students this year.”

Funding for Operation Round Up comes from the donations of PRECO’s member-consumers. Each participating member’s electric bill is “rounded up” to the next dollar to provide charitable funds in the areas of food, shelter, clothing, medical, the environment and education. Participation is voluntary, and members may choose to opt in or out any time online at www.preco.coop or by contacting PRECO’s Customer Care Department at 800-282-3824.
