PRECO Downed Power Line Safety Tips

Peace River Electric Cooperative (PRECO) reminds residents to avoid cleaning up around downed power lines or fallen trees that could have power lines tangled in them.

“Never take chances around downed power lines,” says Van Crawford, V.P. of operations for PRECO. “It’s impossible to know if power lines are energized just by looking at them.”

Downed Power Line Tips

  • Assume all power lines are energized and dangerous. Even lines that de-energized could become energized at any time.
  • Never touch a downed power line. And never touch a person or object that is touching a power line.
  • If someone is injured while contacting a power line, do not try to assist the person. You could be the next victim. Call 911.
  • Report downed power lines to PRECO at 800-282-3824.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, line crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

To report an outage, use PRECO’s SmartHub mobile app, text OUT to 8002823824 (prior registration required) or call 800-282-3824. For updates, find us on Facebook and Twitter or visit www.preco.coop.
