Peace River Electric Cooperative (PRECO) is teaming up with Seminole Electric Cooperative (Seminole), our wholesale power provider, for a smart thermostat program called Cooperative Rewards. The program is designed to help reduce energy costs and increase the reliability of our electric grid.
It’s simple and convenient. By enrolling in Cooperative Rewards, you can make money while saving energy!
Program Eligibility
To take advantage of Cooperative Rewards, members must:
- Agree to participate in cooling and heating adjustments
- Have a qualified smart thermostat
- Be accepted into the program by PRECO
- Ensure their smart thermostat is connected to their home internet
Eligible brands include: Alarm.com, Emerson Sensi, Honeywell Home, Lux, Ecobee, and Google Nest.

How It Works
With the Cooperative Rewards program:
- Seminole will raise or lower smart thermostats to manage energy usage during times of high demand or critical need.
- These brief adjustments (called “controls”) typically go unnoticed—you’ll save energy and money without sacrificing comfort.
- You can opt out of any control event by manually adjusting your thermostat.
- However, participants opting out of more than 25% of control minutes may not be eligible for some incentives.

Program Incentives
- $20 annual bill credit each March. (limit 1 per electric account)
- $10 additional bill credit each October for participation in winter/heat controls
- Chance to win a $250 Visa/Mastercard gift card if you remain enrolled and participate in at least 75% of control minutes.(1 winner per household, drawn at the end of each program year in March)
Controlling your thermostat helps reduce strain on the grid and keeps energy costs lower for everyone. While Cooperative Rewards offers direct savings for you, the whole community benefits from a more efficient electric system.

- You may be contacted by PRECO or your thermostat vendor to enroll in the Cooperative Rewards program.
- Cooperative Rewards is an annual program that began in 2023. Program structure and continuation are not guaranteed year after year.
Cooperative Rewards FAQs
Cooperative Rewards is a voluntary program for residential PRECO members who have an eligible smart thermostat connected to their central HVAC/heating system.
It was created to help reduce energy use during times of high energy demand or critical need. This decreases the need for PRECO to purchase more expensive power, promotes grid reliability, and helps keep energy costs lower for everyone.
You agree to allow brief adjustments to your smart thermostat during times of high electric demand or critical needs. In the summer season (April 1 through October 31), adjustments may be called between 1 to 7 p.m. up to 18 times.
During the winter season (November 1 through March 31), adjustments may be called between 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. up to 18 times.
In case of critical need, more than 18 events may be called in either season. Unless a critical need arises, adjustments will not occur on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day
You will receive a $20 bill credit no later than March. If you have electric heat and participate in winter heat controls, you will receive an additional $10 bill credit in October.
Members who participate in a minimum of 75% of the event minutes in summer and winter will have a chance to win a $250 Visa/Mastercard gift card.

When an event begins, your thermostat will be raised up to 4 degrees above its current setting in the summer and decreased up to 4 degrees below its current setting in the winter. Events typically last less than 1 hour. After an event, your thermostat will return to its normal setting.
No. On event days, your thermostat will be adjusted by 4 degrees or less. You maintain control of your thermostat and may easily opt out of an event for any reason.
Yes. You may opt out of any event through your thermostat, mobile device, or online.
Send an email, requesting to end your participation in the program. After removal from Cooperative Rewards, your thermostat will no longer be affected, and you will not be eligible to receive the annual participation incentives.
