Founded in 1940, Peace River Electric Cooperative (PRECO) was born out of a simple yet powerful idea: bring light and opportunity to rural communities that were left in the dark by investor-owned utilities. What began with just a handful of energized homes and farms has grown into a thriving cooperative that now serves more than 70,000 members across 10 counties in Central Florida.
Our service area—divided into 9 geographic districts—extends from the west coast to the east coast. This wide footprint reflects the trust our members place in us every day to power their homes, farms, and businesses with reliability and care.
As a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative, PRECO exists to serve—not to profit. Our mission is rooted in providing safe, reliable, and affordable electric service while enriching the communities we call home. Every dollar earned is reinvested into system improvements, member programs, and the strength of the cooperative as a whole.
While PRECO does not generate electricity, we partner with Seminole Electric Cooperative in Tampa, Florida, to purchase wholesale power for our members. This partnership ensures stable, cost-effective access to electricity and allows us to focus on delivering it safely and efficiently.
PRECO is guided by the 7 Cooperative Principles, including democratic member control, concern for community, and education, which remain the foundation of everything we do. We are proud to offer innovative services, such as advanced metering, outage alerts, energy audits, and Operation Round Up—a charitable program that empowers our members to help neighbors in need.
