Board Election Process
PRECO's Board of Directors is comprised of one member from each of the nine districts in its 10-county service territory. Directors are democratically elected to three-year staggered terms. Each year, three of the nine Director seats expire.
Events in Year Previous to Elections
OCTOBER
The deadline for nominating committee names to be submitted to the PRECO Board of Directors is one week prior to the October Board Meeting. If you with to serve on the nominating committee, please contact your Director (
Board of Directors).
NOVEMBER
PRECO's Board of Directors officially names the nominating committee.
DECEMBER
PRECO publishes in the Florida Monthly Magazine the names and telephone numbers of the nominating committee. The PRECO membership is asked to submit to this nominating committee, names of qualified nominees to run for the Board of Directors.
Events During the Election Year
JANUARY
The nominating committees meet and name Board of Director nominees. Nominee names, along with their biographies, are mailed to each member residing in the respective district. This notice will also inform each member of the date, time, and place of the district meeting. Members may also be nominated by petition.
FEBRUARY
District meetings are held and Directors are democratically elected.
MARCH
Newly elected Board Members are officially seated at PRECO's Annual Meeting.
What qualifies a member to run for office?
Any person who meets the following qualifications is eligible to serve as a Director:
- Membership: Candidates must have been members of the Cooperative for at least 12 months. They must reside in the district which they will represent and purchase electric energy from the Cooperative at that residence.
- Employment: Candidates must not be employed by (or have a financial interest in) a competing supplier of electrical energy or a firm which does substantial business with the Cooperative. Candidates must not be employees of PRECO, and must not have been employees for at least two years. A candidate who becomes a Director will not be eligible for employment by PRECO for at least two years after leaving the Board of Directors.
- Relatives: Candidates must not have a close relative employed by the Cooperative, as defined by PRECO's bylaws.
